Community-Based Tourism (CBT) — where villages turn culture and hospitality into lasting income, dignity, and leadership.
Lao Chai 1 was once a quiet, struggling village. A few families attempted tourism but lacked support and know-how. With Action on Poverty’s help and your generosity, they built something stronger: a thriving local economy and a community development fund fueled by tourism income, which now supports struggling households, nutrition education and improved meals, home renovations, and cultural events.
At just 25, Pang, a Hmong mother of three, lived a quiet life. Though talented in dance and music, she rarely spoke up. Her confidence — like her creativity — was hidden.
That changed when Pang joined Action on Poverty’s Community-Based Tourism initiative and trained in Hospitality, Marketing, and English. Slowly, Pang found her voice.
She and her husband are now part of their village’s CBT model — preserving culture, generating income, and shaping a new future for their family.
This isn’t a project, it’s a sustainable system, built and led by the community.
